The Southern Junior Camp

Following ONZ’s decision that it was not possible to run one large National Junior Camp, three clubs took on the role of offering junior camps.  In the next few editions we have a brief look at how these camps went, starting with the southern regional Orienteering camp for school years 9 to 13 hosted by Marlborough.

A small but dedicated group of parents and around 40 kids got together in Nelson. We were all so pleased to get together after another year of yo-yo pandemic levels, so it was amazing to see all the kids buzzing outdoors with maps. Michael Croxford organised a bunch of good maps and accommodation when the national camp became untenable with Covid looming., The Nelson location was out of town (and almost out of coverage) – which all helped to reinforce the teamwork, communication and evening social fun. There was much discussion about mapping of urban areas, and how to read rock details and putting it all into practice for the lead-up-to ‘Not the’ Oceania events.  Every year we love to see these young orienteers incrementally improving their navigation capabilities, so many thanks to all the helpers and the organisers for yet another memorable camp to end the year.
