The Classic, originally the Winter Classic, is an endurance event that is both physically and mentally demanding. The event generally takes the form of a one-person relay with a pivot control and a series of loops, i.e. you do all the legs yourself! This was originally organised by Wairarapa Orienteering Club from 1987 until the early 2000’s , then Wellington took over. The M40 class incorporates the Wayne Cretney Memorial in memory of the Wairarapa member tragically killed in a work accident in 1987.
The 2024 edition takes in an eclectic mix of farmland, pine forest and native bush on the very northern edge of Wellington. There are many tracks and even more contours – have you got what it takes? As well as the Classic courses which are age-graded, there will be a full range of red, orange, yellow and white, and a 3-hour rogaine option. Remember that the Classic Courses are designed to be tough! The Rogaine Team Explorer, orange, yellow and white courses are easier and family-friendly.
