B-Max is our introductory formula for orienteering on a bike, see website below. The Wainui Trail Park contains a network of easy trails and we'll provide 3 courses. 1km round the open area plus we have been allowed to use the motorcycle zone; 2.8km round the wetland loop all on easy tracks; and 5km with some up and down and roundabout involved. The park is in native bush and sheltered in all winds.
Hard-core mountainbikers will not be challenged, use it to help family and friends into the sport. There are plenty of more challenging trails nearby.
Foot-orienteers may ask "why on a bike"? The answer is, I can go faster than my brain can navigate. Getting the right balance between speed and navigation is the essence of orienteering. Try it. Simple map-holders available for your handlebars.
PS We are continuing out trials of the cellphone app MapRun. In theory this uses the GPS in your phone to record your visits to each control without needing you to stop and punch. We expect it to work well on the short course but GPS error will make you appear to miss some controls in the trees. Help us find its limits, instructions for downloading the app are at this earlier event: https://www.orienteering.org.nz/events/scorephone-event/
