General information
Welcome to the Karori Park orienteering event. This course uses a mixture of park trails, forest tracks, and off-track navigation. Please read the following safety information carefully before starting.
Join us good and early for the College Sport Wellington Series Prizegiving from about 10.45.
Terrain
Karori Park contains a network of walking and mountain bike trails through forested terrain, with some steep slopes and uneven ground. Competitors may encounter fallen trees, branches, muddy areas, and slippery surfaces, particularly after wet weather.
Hazards and Safety Information
Mountain Bikes on Steep Mountain Bike Trails
- Some of the steeper mountain bike trails and jump areas are out of bounds.
- These trails are marked on the map tracks with green shading - and also a Red out of bounds X.
- Do not run along these trails.
- When crossing these trails, stop and look carefully for approaching riders.
- Signs are located at the entrances and exits of mountain bike-only trails.
Mountain Bikes on Shared Trails
Some flatter mountain bike trails are designated as shared-use trails and may be used during the course.
- These are mapped as just standard tracks.
- Mountain bikes may be travelling at speed.
- Stay alert and listen for approaching riders.
- Move clear of the trail if a rider approaches.
- Mountain bikes have priority on shared-use trails.
Fallen Trees and Branches
There are fallen trees in many forest areas, the darker the green the more likely that fallen trees will impact running through the area.
- Eye protection is strongly recommended when travelling through forested areas.
- Some fallen trees (usually larger trees) are mapped as prominent vegetation features (with a brown triangle).
- Some trails may be partially blocked.
Slippery Ground and Steep Slopes
Parts of the course include steep and potentially slippery terrain.
- Take extra care on descents and side slopes.
- Adjust your speed to suit conditions.
- Wear footwear with suitable grip.
Sports Field Restrictions
The sports field is out of bounds.
- We do not have permission to run across the playing fields.
- Use the paths and trails around the edge of the field.
- Please respect any games, training sessions, or other activities taking place.
Restrictions
- Course closure is 2:30.
- Always download at registration when you return – so we know you are back.
- Report any injuries or accidents to registration.
