Parking and directions

The event centre is in Te Aro School next to Boyd Wilson sports field.

If you're using public transport, take any bus which stops at Kelburn campus, head uphill south past the roundabout and walk down through the university. If you work in town or take a bus which stops on the Terrace, Te Aro school is a short but steep walk or bike ride up Buller Street from the city centre following the City to Sea Walkway.

You can also take the Cable Car to Salamanca Road and walk through the university from there.

Competitor parking is not available in the school (helpers are OK to park in the school from 6pm) and there is limited space on surrounding streets. Convenient paid parking is available on Waiteata Road - head south to the start and event centre.

Afterwork event

Short distance sprint orienteering through urban terrain.

Intricate university and school campuses with multiple levels connected by footpaths and suburban roads.

Course Scale Length, climb, no. of controls Difficulty
Short 1:2500 2.2km, 65m climb, 13 controls Slightly easier
Long 1:2500 3.0km, 120m climb, 19 controls Slightly harder

Start times

6pm to 7pm

Distance to start

Close to event centre.

The nearest toilets are in the university campus, e.g. around the Hub.

Specific Hazards and Notes:

  • Moving and parked vehicles. The courses do not cross major roads (Kelburn Parade and Salamanca Road), but do use and cross minor roads, internal roads and parking areas. Use footpaths along roads, take care when crossing, and look where you're going in the car parking areas.
  • Narrow passageways, low ceilings and steps. The university campus in particular has complex areas of pathways around re-purposed houses, many are narrow with irregular steps. Watch your footing, your head, and other competitors!
  • Cliffs, rock faces and retaining walls. Stay well away from the uphill side of any cliffs mapped as impassable. (Thick black line at the top of the cliff.)
  • Steep and slippery slopes off paths. Most off-path areas are out of bounds; if you take a permitted off-path route beware it will likely be steep! Wear grippy footwear and control your speed.
  • Other competitors. Keep your eyes up when rounding blind corners!
  • Members of the public. Be courteous to bikers, runners, walkers and dogs also using the tracks.

If you've run here before, the map has been rescaled to 1:4000 and updated to the current sprint standard to improve clarity. Both courses are using enlargements as above. Feedback would be very welcome, we want to make our maps as usable as possible. Thanks!
