Following two crewsy MTB rogaines last year, the rest of the Kapiti Coast is crying out to be explored! We've mapped the zone from the Waikanae River north, and will revisit the proposed Otaraua Park, most of which is still delightfully rural. So another 2hr MTB rogaine for bikes on the flat Kapiti coast. 3hrs for feet, or slower riders. Shorter options by arrangement. This is a team event, but solos are fine.
We'll have about 50 controls. Expect to ride quiet streets and lanes. Leafy lifestyle block culs-de-sac. The shared path along the new expressway. The Waikanae River trail. The proposed Otaraua Park. Tracks through the dunes. (Check the tide tables, you may be able to short-cut along the beach.) Ordinary bikes will be fine, hard-core mountain-bikers won't generate any adrenalin whatsoever. Kids with a "road sense" welcome, under Y9 must be in a family group.
Pre-register by Wed 15 May at the website below using the "Laid-back Daytime Rogaine" form. Pay on the day, adult rates $20 less $5 for pre-registering and another $5 off for orienteering club members. (You can join OHV on the same website.) Juniors Y9 to age 20 half price. Under Y9 free. Enter on the day subject to map printing.
Put it in your diary. We don't have a publicity or a training officer - use this to recruit your friends. If you plan to do 3hrs, maps will be available from 9:30 for a 10am start. For 2.5hrs or less maps will be available from 10 for a 10:30am start. Note that we envisage a fast rider might mop up all the controls hence suggest 2 or 2.5hrs for bikes; but no objection to slower riders (and footies) doing 3hrs. This is a laid-back event after all.:-))
And in line with that, a quality statement. The course will not be independently checked. Which means that the odd mistake can creep thru. This is normal for our rogaines, we just use majority vote to decide whether a credit should be made:-))
Stop Press - as an alternative to our question-and-answer controls, you can use the cellphone app "MapRun". Navigate to the feature and your phone will beep; at the end your score, time and track will be uploaded onto the internet. Before you come, download the app onto your phone. The play store may want to send you to "Mapmyrun" and this is not it. Try adding "orienteering" to the search. The app we use is by "FNE Enterprises" and it has a green "M" as the icon. To take care of your cellphone on the move, an armband or a bumbag is a good idea. Your phone will need to be fully charged.
