This is a new area for MTBO, but the terraces near the lighthouse are flat and fast at this time of year. Its a great learning area - we have a basic circuit of 5km, and some variations which will let you practice route choice and direction-finding. These will take it to 10km, with a couple of 00 metres of climb. Ideal those new to MTBO or womens AR.
We have to say, it wont be kid-friendly like our river corridor events. The area is, shall we say, breezy, and there's no shortcut home. Come prepared, and that includes a way to hold your map securely on your bike. Holding it in your hand or teeth wont cut it. We'll have some el cheapo mapholders at $5 but don't guarantee the rubber bands!! Also some better ones with a plastic map cover.
But the upside is brilliant views across Fitzroy Bay to the south coast and the south island. And you can stop off at the historic lighthouse cottages.
These are specified-order courses with interval starts, although we're completely fine with mates or families riding together. If you're new plan to start soon after 10am, If you know what you're doing sleep in and start by 11am. The course closes at 1pm.
Low-key organisation with controls marked by ribbons and self-timing. Accordingly its half the normal entry fee ie $10/$5. Courses are on the MapRunF cellphone app which will record your control visits and route for those so inclined. If you want to do this, download the app before you come, its a new version since last year.
