Auckland Orienteering Series (AOS) double header weekend 21 & 22 March 2020
North West Orienteering Club (NWOC) is hosting a weekend of high-quality orienteering, with new maps and varied terrain on Auckland’s South Head. The perfect orienteering hit out before the National Championships three weeks later.
AOS events on both days have a wide selection of courses – 5 red courses (long to short), 2 orange, yellow and white. Enter on the day, with start times from 11 am until 1.30 pm, and course closure at 3pm: registration opens at 10 am.
Both AOS events are being held in conjunction with the trials for the NZ teams for Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) and World University Orienteering Championship (WUOC). Middle trial on Saturday and Long trial on Sunday. The JWOC / WUOC trialists will start each day between 9.30 am and 11 am, so you will be able to watch the best juniors in New Zealand in action, with live commentary and radio-control tracking on both days.
AOS 2 event Saturday 21 March – Turkey Ridge North (remap of an area last used about ten years ago), sand dune terrain with areas of complex contours. Vegetation cover includes grass, rough open and significant areas of manuka scrub. The red courses will have a middle-distance flavour and can expect challenging orienteering with tight controls in areas of low visibility. Hilly in parts, with great views over Woodhill Forest and the Tasman Ocean when you want a break from looking at the map. ONZ event listing, includes driving directions.
AOS 3 event Sunday 22 March – New map, north of the World Masters Hedley Dunes map and south of the Lake Kereta map. Sand dune terrain with a wide variety of vegetation cover: classical Woodhill plantation forest; native bush / manuka; swamp; rough open. Areas of complex contours, some steep bits, some flat fast bits. Course controller Gene Beveridge rates the terrain as some of the most varied and the best he has come across in New Zealand. ONZ event listing, includes driving directions.
