Entries are open for the NZ Orienteering Championships 2020 (‘Nationals’). Every year at Easter we look forward to Nationals, the pinnacle of our orienteering calendar and great fun for orienteers of all any age and experience. This year, Nationals is being hosted by Orienteering Wellington, who have lined up four events that maximise some of the lower North Island’s best coastal forest and dune country.
- Friday 10 April 2020 – sprint. A fast event that challenges the orienteer to make snap decisions in a complex urban environment. Pit Park, Palmerston North.
- Saturday 11 April 2020 – long-distance. Courses test participants’ endurance through tricky coastal pine forest and dune country. Parewanui, Scotts Ferry.
- Sunday 12 April 2020 – middle-distance. A shorter course but the most technically demanding, requiring the utmost focus from the orienteer. Osgiliath NW, Waitarere.
- Monday 13 April 2020 – team relay. A fun event that is run in teams. Whirokino, Waitarere.
Sprint, long distance and middle distance events serve as world ranking events (WRE) and trials for world championships. Each event also offers a wide range of courses for orienteers of any age and experience.
As at Friday 6 March 2020, with 21 days until entries close, 119 people have their entries confirmed. Entries close at midnight Friday 27 March 2020.
