New Zealand Team Arrives at the European Youth Orienteering Championships
By Joolz - Sat 2 Jul 2022 7:37pm

The eight strong New Zealand team for EYOC have assembled in Salgótarján in Hungary – and their first reaction – it’s hot! At nearly 40°, it’s going to be a challenge for the New Zealanders, having just left winter in New Zealand, but they’re up for it, and raring to go!

The competition starts on Saturday with the long distance in forested, hilly terrain with some areas of intricate contours from mining , followed by an urban sprint in the afternoon on Sunday and then finishes back in the forest for the relay on Monday.

The European nations use this competition to prepare their athletes for JWOC in future years and with around 100 runners in each of the four grades (W16, M16, W18 and M18) it’s a good chance to see the level of competition in this age group in Europe. It’s also a great experience to meet with orienteers from all over Europe, and make friendships which can be carried onto events from year to year.

It is possible to follow the competition on IOF live.:

The New Zealanders start times for the long distance (in NZST) are:

Emily Hayes 8:35pm, Katherine Babington 9:25pm, Zefa Fa’avae 9:32pm, Zara Stewart 10:03pm, Anna Babington 10:10pm, Kaia Joergensen 10:53pm, Rachel Baker 11:08pm, Felix Hunt 11:24pm
