Martin Peat has arrived in Europe, and after few travel mishaps he is on his bike riding.

Martin reports that racing in Europe got off to a rough start in Czechia with flight delays, a lost bag (fortunately not the bike!). A set of riding kit in my carry-on will do for the week and the good sorts at AutoPilot loaned me a map board.

Add in jet lag and it was always going to be difficult arriving an hour or so before the first race, a middle distance at the Orient Express 5-days in Czechia. Located near Olomouc, the forest and maps are typical continental terrain of broad gully/spur and a structured semi-regular track network.

All tracks are rideable in both directions, a notable distinction from NZ, meaning more choice between going in/out vs through (turning costs time and lost speed).

Biggest takeaways from day 1? Invaluable racing experience. Minimise silly mistakes, commit to route choices and backing myself to execute, most of all keep attacking the course. The Czechs are big on MTBO. There’s a quality field with great organisation, maps and course setting. They sure know how to race over here.
