New Zealand has been awarded the 2029 Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) following a decision by the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) Council from a meeting on 6-8 July 2026. The 2029 event will be only the second time JWOC has been held in Oceania, and the first in New Zealand.
Canterbury offers varied and technically diverse orienteering terrain, from alpine tussock and native forest to intricate rock detail and coastal landscapes, the region provides an ideal test for the next generation of the world’s best junior orienteers. With an international airport, not far from the vibrant city centre of Ōtautahi / Christchurch, and easy access to bth the mountains and coastline, the region is perfectly placed to host a world-class championship.
Hosting JWOC is not only an exciting opportunity for Canterbury and New Zealand but also a celebration of orienteering’s continued international growth. We welcome the world’s leading junior athletes, coaches, officials, and supporters in 2029.
