Sprint relay event added to JWOC2022
By Joolz - Sun 10 Jul 2022 1:42pm

The IOF Council has unanimously decided to add to a Sprint Relay as an official Medal Race at the Junior World Orienteering Championships 2022.  All in all, there will be 3 sprint events for JWOC this week until it is determined if the athletes can go into forest areas.

The new event will be organised on Wednesday 13th July 2022 from Arena Carapito, which is also the arena for the Sprint Championships on Monday 11th July. On Friday 15th July, a Relay will be organised in two classes: One class for Men and One class for Women. On Friday 15th July, a Relay will be organised in two classes: One class for Men and One class for Women. This race will not be an official Junior World Orienteering Championship Event.

We send our encouragement and gratitude to the Portuguese Orienteering Federation | Federação Portuguesa de Orientação, local clubs and orienteers as they work on providing new events in such a short time .

The change in events is due to an extreme risk of fire, that has developed over the last couple of days resulting in multiple forest fires in various parts of Portugal, the Portuguese government has issued a nation-wide total ban on access to forests starting on Friday 8th July – and so far lasting until Friday 15th July.
