Event Information – Taitonga South Island Orienteering Championship 2023
By Christo Peters - Tue 22 Nov 2022 10:03pm

The Nelson Orienteering club team has preparations for SIOC2023 well underway. Mapping is nearly done on all the areas and an experienced team of setters and controllers is in place. We’re looking forward to offering all of our fellow kiwi-orienteers, and hopefully some overseas old and new friends now travel is no longer restricted, a high quality, compact orienteering adventure!

Saturday morning 28 January – Middle – To kickstart the weekend, the ‘devil is in the detail’ setting and controlling of Amelia Horn and Nelson club president Matt Ogden results in a technical, high-speed event at one of Nelson’s favourite locations, Moturoa West / Rabbit Island, a tricky forested dune area.

Saturday evening 28 January – Sprint – A brand new location and map for the sprint, over three school campuses in and around Nayland College, in the Nelson’s suburb of Stoke. Fast decision making on a course created by setter Daniel Penney and controller Callum Coombs will be required for a clean, speedy run.

Sunday morning 29 January – Long – Riley and Michael Croxford are bringing their A-game for the final event of these Southern Champs at Teetotal / West Bay in the mountainous area near St. Arnaud, Nelson Lakes.

How to enter?

For more information please visit the SIOC2023 website, where detailed information will be added over the weeks ahead. Online entry via EnterO will open 1 December 2022, with a 50% increase in prices after Wednesday 4 January until the final entry date of Friday 13 January 2023.

As a dare to the orienteering community, and to massively help us with all things logistic in the hectic summer months, one randomly drawn participant who registered and paid before Christmas eve, will receive his / her entry fees back – in other words, will be competing for free!

If you are planning to come anyway, please register sooner than later, and it might be you receiving free entry to an exciting weekend of orienteering at the top of the South Island of New Zealand!

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact the team via sioc2023@gmail.com.
