After a flurry of team selections in the last few months we are now seeing the first of the New Zealand teams represent us overseas with the Orienteering World Cup races in Olten Switzerland. As I write the individual sprints are shortly about to take place. International races coming up include World Cup round 2 (Italy), European Youth Championships, JWOC and WOC in the next few months. Closer to home Kings Birthday events in Nelson with a world ranking event included should be a fantastic weekend – unfortunately I’m not going myself as I’m pregnant with the next generation of orienteer.

At our recent Board meeting we checked in on the business plan progress and received an update on Gene’s (ONZ Training Coordinator) work. As a reminder he’s developed some great resources for coaching and schools orienteering which are on the website and we look forward to him being a bit more hands on when he’s back in the country in July.

We’ve been discussing the best way to recruit into the High Performance Leader role after Malcolm Ingham finished up at the end of 2023, a working group with representatives from the Board, athletes and ONZ staff met last week and are finalising a recommendation for the Board to consider later in June. After that we should be in a position to advertise and and further build on all the effort and work Malcolm put into building our high performance programme.
