View from the Chair | July 2025

Over the last month there has been a lot of orienteering. We have had national teams competing at WOC, JWOC and EYOC, with a great contingent of people supporting them in person. Zefa, Tim and Joe all had exceptional runs in the WOC relay resulting in 9th – New Zealand’s best ever WOC relay result. There’s also a number of other New Zealand orienteers making the most of the European orienteering season, attending the likes of Origen and competitions in Italy. I’ve been wondering what the total time of orienteers in New Zealand watching dots on screens has been over the last month! I enjoyed catching up with a friend and watching most of the JWOC sprint live.

ONZ’s have written a letter to School Sport NZ to support Home School Student inclusion in their sanctioned events. The Board confirmed changes to relevant policies about selection for school age competitions such at the Southern Cross team to include home schooled students.

We expect to have more information about a possible JWOC 2029 bid later in the year once a feasibility study is complete and the Board can make a decision about submitting a bid.
