Sprint – St Cuthbert’s College
The sprint event turned into a true test – even for the hardy Blunt umbrellas – as torrential rain, wild winds, and saturated conditions made for a challenging day. Despite the weather, 13 marshals were stationed around the course, joined by many dedicated club and family members who braved the elements to watch over all students competing. Fortunately, the event centre was set up close to the Carlton Rugby Club, providing a dry and convenient location for prize giving and spot prizes. While the conditions created some muddy patches and unpredictable finishes, we were relieved that no one was injured – though it definitely added a bit of suspense to the final sprints!

Long – Mushroom Rd
The local iwi were incredibly supportive and played a key role in helping facilitate the event in the forest. With a newly updated map by Martin Crosby and perfect weather conditions, it was a pleasure to watch the students take on the physical challenges of the course in a small yet demanding area. The Long event, traditionally known for its endurance demands, made full use of the hilly spur-and-gully terrain, offering championship-grade courses that truly tested the orienteers’ skills and stamina.

Relay- Célèbre
The final day of the event began with a karakia led by the local kaumātua – a fitting and meaningful way to start the final event. After two days of solo orienteering, the relays introduced the usual exciting team dynamic with head-to-head racing. The terrain was ideal — some areas had limited visibility due to dense trees, with a tight network of tracks near the finish demanding high concentration or tempting risky choices in the hopes of a quick gain. The vibe at the event centre was electric, with a run-through area bringing spectators and supporters close to the action, cheering and supporting each other. The event ended on a high note, with more ideal weather, loads of energy, and an incredible display of team spirit.
