Robbie & Val Robinson on 2026 New Year’s Honours list

We are incredibly proud of two orienteering members who have been recognised in the 2026 King’s New Year Honours List. John (Robbie) Dempster Robinson and Valerie Jean Robinson have been appointed Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to orienteering, and for extending the sport to the wider community.

Robbie and Val’s talent, leadership, and long-standing contribution to the sport through the Counties Manukau Orienteering Club (CMOC) has impacted many beyond the greater South Auckland region. They began orienteering in 1974, just one year after the sport was officially established in New Zealand, and have since played a pioneering role in its development. Through their work, the Robinsons have inspired people to spend time outdoors and build confidence as they learn navigation skills while exploring their local area.

In 1988, they founded the New Zealand Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships to grow youth participation nationwide. Their lifetime involvement in the sport has includes mapping, course setting, event management, and securing grant and external funding to increase accessibility and participation.

At the national level, Robbie has served as a council member, contributed to technical and programme committees, and coached and managed Orienteering New Zealand world championship teams. His contribution was recognised with Life Membership of Orienteering New Zealand in 2003, followed by Val’s Life Membership in 2018.

Val and Robbie have made an outstanding contribution to the community, helping young people build confidence and self-sufficiency and making a genuine difference in people’s lives. Map and compass skills give many direction and purpose beyond the sport, creating a strong foundation for the future.

We are honoured that Robbie and Val as part of the sport of orienteering are recognised in the 2026 New Year Honours List. Orienteering New Zealand would like to offer many congratulations to many in the community who have been acknowledged this year.
