2018 Council Vacancies

The Orienteering NZ Council is a governance Council, which means we are committed to ensuring the best interests of orienteering in NZ are met.

Orienteering NZ is inviting applications from suitable applicants for three vacancies on the Council.

Council members are elected by the membership for a term of 3 years.

The Council meets regularly during the year – usually February to November – via video conference and one face-to-face workshop for planning purposes.

What does the ONZ Council do?

  • Ensures the Orienteering NZ Annual Business Plan and Budget align to the Strategic Plan.
  • Contracts staff to undertake the management and operation of Orienteering NZ.
  • Develops and ensures compliance with policies on national issues to provide direction and consistency across these issues.
  • Advocates for and provides leadership of orienteering within NZ.
  • Sets the framework for national competitions and international touring teams which are then managed by staff.
  • Makes decisions around issues of national importance.
  • Provides a conduit between NZ and international organisations, in particular IOF, including providing feedback on IOF initiatives.
  • Address issues of international significance which affect all sports, such as anti-doping and sports betting.
  • Utilises the strengths of all Council members to ensure the best decisions are made.

What the ONZ Council doesn’t do?

  • Get involved in local club issues or events.
  • Organise competitions.
  • Become involved in selection decisions.
  • Provide technical advice on rules, mapping, competitions, etc.
  • Make management decisions.

What skills does the Council need?

  • People who are willing to provide their time, knowledge and experience.  It’s not a time consuming role, but does require a level of commitment and some focused time.
  • Orienteers who are open to new ideas, willing to challenge and critique how things have been done in the past to ensure they are done better in the future.
  • Be strategic in your thinking.
  • Be willing to learn new skills.
  • Be open to challenges.
  • Be able to listen.

How can you help the Council?

  • If this sounds like something you are interested in, all you need to do is forward your application to the ONZ General Manager before the deadline.
  • You don’t need to be nominated or supported by a club.
  • If you think you can help, we want to hear from YOU.
