To encourage people who were close to Southern Cross selection to go under the Development Team banner, parent Jenni Adams is looking to put together a squad to go to Australia.
Please note that while Orienteering New Zealand supports providing opportunities for students to gain international experience, this is not an official national team or squad and therefore is not overseen by Orienteering New Zealand, nor is it governed or staffed in accordance with our policies. Jenni Adams holds the positions of ONZ Performance Leader and Board Member but this squad falls outside these roles.
NZ Schools Development Squad Trip to Australia
The Southern Cross selectors were impressed by the strength and depth of school-level orienteering, which has motivated the decision to take an extended group to Australia this year. The athletes named below were identified through their results at King’s Birthday and/or through the attitude and commitment they’ve shown. Above all, we are looking for keen athletes – anyone motivated to develop is more than welcome to join us.
Senior girls: Audrey Austin, Grace Cory-Wright, Cerys Findlow, Juliet Freeman, Lani Murray, Torun Joergensen, Harriet Johnston, Dora Slavich
Senior boys: Jacob Abernathy, Reuben Adye, Elvies Kim, Leo O’Neill, Charlie Milne, James Milne, Evan Rees-Jones, James Wallace
Junior girls: Tamsyn McCamish, Kara Morgan, Josie Hua, Charlotte Ashcroft, Petra Slavich, Felicity Mortell, Alaina Smith, Cate Wheeler
Junior boys: George Abbott, Quinn Harris, Caleb Jansen, Aaron Pepper, Tyler Poland, Hector Symons, Finley Connor
Accommodation and minibus transport will be arranged in collaboration with the Australian Independent Athletes group. Coaching sessions and social activities with the other school teams are planned. Those interested in attending should arrange their own flights to Brisbane, preferably arriving on Friday, 26th September, and departing on the evening of Sunday, 5th October. The estimated cost for accommodation, food, and transport in Brisbane is approximately $1,000. Entry fees for the events are additional.
