The World Schools Orienteering Championship will be held in L’Aquila, Italy, in June 2017 Palermo – Italy 22 April 2017 to 28 April 2017

This Selection Notice is in compliance with the Orienteering NZ World Schools Orienteering Championships Teams Selection Policy 2014.

World Schools Orienteering Championships (WSOC) is held under the auspices of the International School Sport Federation (ISF).

ONZ will select a school in each grade (M1, W1, M2, W2) to compete in the school teams category. The selection for each grade will be for a specific school and not individual runners. It is the responsibility of the selected school to choose which specific runners will make up their team. No representative team will be selected.

The four grades selected have specific age requirements:

  • M2 school teams, boys (born in 2002 / 2003)
  • W2 school teams, girls (born in 2002 / 2003)
  • M1 school teams, boys (born in 1999 / 2000 / 2001) maximum two participants born in 1999
  • W1 school teams, girls (born in 1999 / 2000 / 2001 maximum two participants born in 1999

No exceptions are accepted to the above age criteria.

Representative School Selection Criteria

Selection for Representative Schools will be based on performances at the NZ Secondary Schools Championships on 21-23 July 2016.

Schools will only be considered for selection if they can comply fully with the ISF regulations for the WSOC. This includes being able to enter a full team as defined by the ISF regulations.

Athletes must compete in the Orienteering NZ Championship grades for their school to be considered for selection.  Relay results will not be considered as part of the selection process.

Athletes results will be calculated using the following points:

  • The top 5 place-getters of each school will accrue points in Junior, Intermediate and Senior grades as follows:
    • Sprint 1st – 25 points, 2nd – 24, 3rd – 23, down to 25th – 1 point.
    • Long: 1st – 25 points, 2nd – 24, 3rd – 23, down to 25th – 1 point.

The Junior grade points above will be used to select a school(s) for the M/W2 categories.  The Intermediate and Senior grade points combined will be used to select a school(s) for the M/W1 categories.

NZ Secondary Schools Championships

Orienteering NZ expect all orienteers entered at the NZ Secondary Schools Championships to enter in their current age grades and not assume selection preference will be based on “running up” an age grade.

Availability for Representative School selection

Schools interested in attending WSOC must express their interest via email to Tom Reynolds Convenor of the Junior Selection Panel (thomasreynolds123@gmail.com) by 7 July 2016

The email should include the school name, which grades the school wishes to be considered for and a contact person for the school orienteering team (teacher or parent).  Schools may express interest in more than one category.

Orienteering NZ reserves the right to select a replacement Representative School if the original School selected is unable to commit to entering the WSOC. School’s will need to confirm their participation within 1 month of the selected schools being named.

Funding

Orienteering NZ expect the selected schools/athletes to self-fund this event.
