Another award winner to highlight – Lyndon Haugh from Taupo Orienteering.

Lyndon Haugh joined the Taupo Orienteering Club after the Pinelands Orienteering Club wound up  Since then, he has been a very active member of the Taupo club, holding the positions of committee secretary, and he has now been Chairman/President for the last 14 years. When Lyndon joined, the Taupo club had less than 10 members. Since becoming president he has been instrumental in growing the club to well over 60 members now.

Lyndon plays a major part in most Taupo events including event planning, course setting and controlling. Lyndon is the spokesperson for the club, liaising and smoothing the waters with local councils, schools, DOC and landowners which have meant we have retained access for most maps for many years. In 2021 he secured funding from council for the Kiwisport programme in schools, and this is now flourishing with all Taupo schools have school maps. Most of these school maps were field work up-dated by Lyndon.

Taupo Orienteering club members explain that their ” small club can put on A and B grade events (NISS champs, Katoa Po, etc) largely due to Lyndon’s skills with organising, coordinating, delegating and mediating. Lyndon has embraced change and encourages others to do the same and then assess the results. From mail chimp, to zoom calls, map runner, new club shirts, new events including Katoa Po Explorer, Lyndon makes Club members feel supported and valued.

New members find Lyndon is extremely approachable and encouraging, so he is  everyone’s go to person if advice is needed. He has freely given his time to mentoring.

The Taupo ‘O’ Club are thrilled that Lyndon was honoured with this award.  He now joins an elite group of Taupo Club members who have been awarded this distinction including John Davies, Robyn Davies, Graham Teahan, Laurie Baxter, Judy Martin, Terry Brighouse, and Jim Lewis. There must be something in the Taupo water!
